Getting started with ShieldFive

ShieldFive provides zero-knowledge encrypted cloud storage. Your files are encrypted in your browser before upload, ensuring complete privacy.

How do I create an account?

Click "Get started" on the homepage to open the sign-up form. Enter an email and a strong master password. After signup, ShieldFive shows you a recovery key exactly once and asks you to save it before continuing — it is the only way back in if you ever lose the master password. Verify your email and you'll land in your file dashboard.

When can I upload encrypted files?

Before uploading your first file, we recommend two quick steps:

  • Save your recovery key: It is shown once at signup and never again. Save it offline before continuing.

  • Verify your email address: Check your inbox for a verification email and click the confirmation link.

Email verification is required.

How does the vault key work?

You have one vault. Your master password is stretched with Argon2id to derive the vault key, which lives only in your browser's memory while you are signed in. Every file you upload gets its own random encryption key, which is wrapped by the vault key. There is no separate per-file password to set or remember.

How do I encrypt and upload a file?

From your Files dashboard, drag files in or use the upload button. Once your vault is unlocked, encryption happens automatically: each file is encrypted in your browser under a fresh per-file key before the ciphertext leaves your device. Keep the browser tab open while uploads run.

Can ShieldFive reset my master password?

Not without your recovery key. If you have it, you can use the password-reset flow to restore vault access and set a new master password. If you lose both your master password and your recovery key, your files cannot be recovered. Keep the recovery key offline — printed, in a password manager you control, or on a hardware token.

How long do sessions stay active?

You'll remain signed in even after closing your browser tab. To sign out, use the sign-out option in your account menu. Once signed out, you'll need to sign in again to access your files, folders, and settings.

What if I skip onboarding?

You can skip it, but we strongly recommend reviewing the checklist before your first upload. It’s a quick reminder that passphrases can’t be recovered.
