NordLocker Alternative: Encryption, Features and Limits

Compare NordLocker and ShieldFive on encryption, client-code trust, app availability, audits and EU storage. ShieldFive web and Android use different upload formats; review the limits before choosing.

What NordLocker does well

NordLocker is a solid product with a serious company behind it. It is genuinely zero-knowledge and end-to-end encrypted by default: files are encrypted on your device before they reach NordLocker's servers, which hold only ciphertext. It is made by Nord Security — the company behind NordVPN — so it brings real scale, resources, mature apps across web, desktop and mobile (with both a local encrypted vault and cloud sync), and an org-level ISO 27001 certification. In July 2026 it rebuilt its storage engine ("Project Renaissance") for large performance gains. If you want an established, well-resourced vendor with strong brand trust, NordLocker is a reasonable default.

The rest of this page is an honest, two-way comparison — where ShieldFive's tradeoffs fit better, and where NordLocker is ahead.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Post-quantum today, not "prepared." NordLocker's July 2026 rebuild explicitly isolated its quantum-sensitive cryptography into one layer and says the switch will be flipped "once the standards have properly matured." In other words, it is post-quantum-ready but still ships classical algorithms (AES-256, XChaCha20-Poly1305, Ed25519) today.
  • An open, checkable crypto core. NordLocker's clients are closed source. It reuses open-source primitives internally but publishes no open client and no open crypto implementation.
  • EU jurisdiction and disclosed data location. NordLocker is provided by nordvpn S.A., a Panamanian company, under Panamanian law (it is developed in Lithuania, EU), and its physical data-centre location is not publicly disclosed. Panama has no EU GDPR adequacy decision.

ShieldFive: implementation and limits

ShieldFive encrypts files on the device before upload. Your password never reaches our servers: the browser turns it into a separate login value with Argon2id and sends only that, and the key that opens the vault is derived separately and stays on the device. The app code is delivered by ShieldFive, so the client you are served remains part of the trust boundary; client-side encryption does not mean that ShieldFive is technically unable to decrypt files.

Web uploads default to ML-KEM-1024/XChaCha20-Poly1305, with an AES-256-GCM fallback. Android also defaults to the hybrid format, with the same AES-256-GCM fallback, and reads both formats. This is not post-quantum hybrid encryption on every client or every upload.

Encrypted data is stored in the EU. The crypto core is open under Apache-2.0; the applications are closed-source and no external security audit has been completed. Review the security model and current plans before choosing.

Where NordLocker is ahead, honestly

  • Company scale and trust. NordLocker is backed by Nord Security, a large, established vendor with a multi-year track record, org-level ISO 27001, and independent audits of sibling products (NordVPN, NordPass). ShieldFive is pre-revenue and small. For many buyers, that credibility matters more than any single feature.
  • Mature apps and a bigger top tier. NordLocker's clients are polished, include a local vault, and it offers a 2 TB plan plus a 500 GB tier that ShieldFive does not match at the low end.
  • Both are closed-source apps, and neither has a product-specific external audit. ShieldFive's crypto library is open, and it has published an internal review — but its app is closed too, and it has no external audit. We will not imply parity on certification, or claim an audit edge, because there isn't one.

Compare the authentication trust model separately from encryption algorithms, jurisdiction, pricing and audit evidence. ShieldFive must not be treated as unconditionally inaccessible to its provider.

Which one fits you

Choose NordLocker if vendor scale, brand trust, a local vault, and an established track record are what you weigh most, and you are comfortable with classical (post-quantum-ready) encryption from a Panamanian provider under Panamanian law.

Choose ShieldFive only if its authentication trust boundary, client-specific encryption formats and current assurance limits meet your requirements. Test upload, viewing, sharing and recovery with disposable files before moving important data.

Comparison reflects each vendor's public documentation as of 22 September 2026, including NordLocker's July 2026 rebuild announcement. Verify current pricing, which is promotional and changes at renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Is NordLocker post-quantum?
Not yet. NordLocker's July 2026 rebuild isolated its quantum-sensitive cryptography into a dedicated layer and says the switch will be flipped "once the standards have properly matured" — so it is post-quantum-ready but still ships classical algorithms (AES-256, XChaCha20-Poly1305, Ed25519) today. ShieldFive web uploads default to ML-KEM-1024/XChaCha20-Poly1305 with AES-GCM fallback. Android also defaults to the hybrid format, with the same AES-GCM fallback, and reads both formats; the hybrid format is not used for every upload.
Is NordLocker zero-knowledge, and is ShieldFive?
NordLocker is genuinely zero-knowledge and end-to-end encrypted by default — files are encrypted on your device and it holds only ciphertext. ShieldFive encrypts files on the device, and the password never reaches its servers: the browser turns it into a separate login value with Argon2id and sends only that, while the key that opens the vault is derived separately and stays on the device. The authentication service remains part of the trust boundary, so this is not an absolute provider-cannot-read guarantee. ShieldFive web uploads default to ML-KEM-1024/XChaCha20-Poly1305 with AES-GCM fallback. Android also defaults to the hybrid format, with the same AES-GCM fallback, and reads both formats; the hybrid format is not used for every upload.
Is NordLocker open source?
No. NordLocker's clients are closed source; it reuses open-source primitives internally but publishes no open client or crypto implementation. ShieldFive publishes its crypto library, @shieldfive/crypto, on npm under Apache-2.0 — though ShieldFive's app itself is also closed source, so the open part is the crypto core.
Is NordLocker audited?
Nord Security holds an org-level ISO 27001 certification and has commissioned independent audits of sibling products (NordVPN, NordPass), but there is no published independent audit of the NordLocker client or its crypto specifically. ShieldFive also has no external audit — only a published internal review — so neither product has a product-specific external audit here.
Is ShieldFive a more EU-based alternative to NordLocker?
On jurisdiction and transparency, yes. NordLocker is developed in Lithuania (EU) but is provided by nordvpn S.A., a Panamanian company, under Panamanian law; Panama has no EU GDPR adequacy decision, and its physical data-centre location is not publicly disclosed. ShieldFive states EU data residency (Frankfurt database, Amsterdam blob storage). Note ShieldFive uses US-parent subprocessors, so the precise claim is EU data residency, not "no US access."
What does ShieldFive cost compared with NordLocker?
ShieldFive has a free 5 GB tier (no card) with flat pricing up to 5 TB (2 TB is €10/month). NordLocker offers 3 GB free and 500 GB and 2 TB plans, but uses introductory pricing that rises at renewal, so compare on post-promo terms. NordLocker offers a 500 GB tier below ShieldFive's smallest paid plan.
